Plastic surgery has a rich history since its origins in India around 600 BC. However, despite a renaissance in the specialty pioneered by the Italian surgeon Tagliacozzi in the late 16th century, it was not until 1921 with the inception of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) that plastic surgery developed as an organized specialty. Evolution of the AAPS parallels the evolution of organized plastic surgery in the last century. Through this history, the AAPS remained a driving beacon of organized plastic surgery, setting a standard that has been emulated worldwide.

The present text represents the collective work of 40 contributors who provide a step-by-step journey of the development of the American Association of Plastic surgery and its impact on the development of organized plastic surgery worldwide. To represent this history in context, we evaluate the impact of key events that shaped our surgical specialty, beginning with World War I. Five senior authors, each covering successive 20-year periods, evaluate the development of the AAPS in this context. We evaluate the response of the AAPS to the recent global pandemic, as well as the changing role of women in the organization. We provide a perspective on the evolution of the AAPS by 12 senior members who have been with the organization for 35-years or longer, as well as that of 12 international leaders who reflect on how organized plastic surgery developed in their countries relative to the development of the AAPS. The current work clearly reflects the pride that plastic surgeons take in the history of their specialty and in the American Association of Plastic Surgeons that initiated this history.
